Fairfax County Department of Solid Waste
Challenge:
With an estimated 130 million cell phones retired each year, the division of Solid Waste Collections and Recycling asked, “What happens when those batteries can no longer hold a charge, do they simply get thrown away?” The challenge they faced was to find creative ways to promote the recycling of these cell phone batteries along with all other types of rechargeable batteries.
Solution:
Together, Solid Waste Collections and Recycling key personnel and the LeapFrog Solutions (LFS) Team conceptualized, designed, and developed a brand identity and collateral materials to educate residents on how to recycle batteries and improve the environment. LFS also created custom-designed recycle bags to be distributed at county events. The bags included colorful informational brochures designed to facilitate the community’s recycling efforts.
Result:
Providing a platform for a call-to-action was essential to the design of this campaign. Creating an informational brochure and bags that the community could readily use to recycle increased the likelihood of participation. Additional success of the campaign’s launch was facilitated by LFS’ ability to thoroughly understand the issue, provide a creative perspective, and deliver quality work under tight deadlines.
